Unit 07 | Assignments

Project C: Final Challenge

Project Overview

For your final project, you will design and print an object to meet a design brief assigned by your instructor. Your instructor should have posted the design brief for this final project at the start of the quarter. Your job is to realize both the functional and aesthetic demands of the design brief with an original design and to print it as a 3D model. Your design should be functional and look good.

Materials

Schedule

Unless otherwise noted, each project part is due by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on the day and unit specified.

Project C is comprised of the following parts, which are due during the units specified:

Project C, Part 1: Design Sketches

Learning Outcomes

After completing this part of the project, you will be able to:

  • based on an aesthetic design challenge, create concept sketches for objects that will be assembled from multiple parts
  • based on an aesthetic design challenge, create orthographic sketches for objects that will be assembled from multiple parts
  • design projects for a 3D printer that incorporate advanced techniques such as assembly of multiple parts and finishing.

Procedure

  1. Create concept sketches for the objects specified in the design brief. In your sketches, consider how the object will be shown or used. These can be rough.
  2. Create orthographic sketches of the parts. Consider how the objects will be assembled or finished, and indicate any additional hardware that will be required. Be sure to account for how the object will work with other elements required by the design brief. Indicate scale on your drawings.
  3. Write a one-paragraph description of the concept behind your design. Explain how it will meet the challenge.
  4. Combine your sketches and the short description of your project into a multipage PDF.

Submission and Due Date

  1. Post concept drafts to the appropriate Unit 7 discussion forum by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 3 of Unit 7. Then, review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least three of them. Make your final posts by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of this unit.
  2. Save your file in PDF format, named as follows:
    • lastnamefirstinitial_projectCpart1.pdf
    • for example, John Doe would name the file “doej_projectCpart1.pdf”.
  3. Submit this file via the Submissions link in the course menu by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of Unit 7.

Grading

Project C, Part 1 will be graded according to the criteria specified in the Project C, Part 1 grading rubric, which can be found in Grades on the course menu. For details on grading, refer to the Syllabus.

Project C, Part 2: Draft Digital Models

Learning Outcomes

After completing this part of the project, you will be able to:

  • develop CAD models of 3D-printable objects, starting from concept and orthographic sketches
  • develop multiple CAD models for separate parts that will be assembled with standard hardware to create a finished item with consideration for compatible scale and how the pieces will be joined.

Procedure

  1. Using Rhino, create models for your parts. Remember that you have to budget time to print the parts with your Robo printer, finish the parts, and assemble your project.
  2. Take care that all of your parts are to the right scale with respect to each other.
  3. Check your models for geometry glitches and errors that can affect final printing.
  4. Save your models as 3DM files, and combine them into a single ZIP package.

Submission and Due Date

  1. Save your files in ZIP format, named as follows:
    • lastnamefirstinitial_projectCpart2.zip
    • for example, John Doe would name the file “doej_projectCpart2.zip”.
  2. Post your work in progress for peer review to the appropriate Unit 8 discussion forum by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 3 of Unit 8. Then, review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least three of them. Make your final posts by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of this unit.
  3. Submit this file via the Submissions link in the course menu by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of Unit 8.

Grading

Project C, Part 2 will be graded according to the criteria specified in the Project C, Part 2 grading rubric, which can be found in Grades on the course menu. For details on grading, refer to the Syllabus.

Project C, Part 3: Final Model and Prototype

Learning Outcomes

After completing this part of the project, you will be able to:

  • successfully create 3D-printed models, starting from concept and orthographic sketches
  • using standard hardware fixtures, assemble projects created from multiple 3D-printed pieces
  • finish 3D-printed parts as appropriate to the design including techniques such as washing, sanding, polishing, and painting.

Procedure

  1. Based on feedback from the previous unit, refine your models.
  2. Print the parts for your project. Take care to budget time to print and finish all the parts you will need for assembly.
  3. Finish your parts as appropriate for your project including removing rough edges, sanding, and washing.
  4. Assemble your project including any additional hardware specified by the brief. Note any problems you have with assembly.
  5. Photograph your assembled project, demonstrating the key features.
  6. Combine your photographs and final .3dm models into a ZIP archive, and submit.

Submission and Due Date

  1. Post your work in progress to the appropriate Unit 9 discussion forum by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 3 of Unit 9. Then, review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least three of them. Make your final posts by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of this unit.
  2. Save your file in ZIP format, named as follows:
    • lastnamefirstinitial_projectCpart3.zip
    • for example, John Doe would name the file “doej_projectCpart3.zip”.
  3. Submit this file via the Submissions link in the course menu by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of Unit 9.
  4. Also, post your finished work for peer review to the appropriate Unit 10 discussion forum by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 7 of Unit 9. Then, review your classmates’ posts, and respond to at least three of them. Make your final posts by 11:59 p.m. U.S. EST/EDT on Day 4 of Unit 10.

Grading

Project C, Part 3 will be graded according to the criteria specified in the Project C, Part 3 grading rubric, which can be found in Grades on the course menu. For details on grading, refer to the Syllabus.
